Major Snowfall and Weather Shifts Expected This Saturday

Alright, folks, if you’re planning to head out this Saturday, brace yourselves because the weather is throwing everything at us—snow, wind, rain, and even a bit of warmth in some areas. Here’s what you need to know so you don’t get caught off guard.

Late Friday night, a weather system from Alberta moved into the province, bringing significant precipitation across various regions. Early Saturday morning, snowfall was already widespread from Abitibi-Témiscamingue to Bas-Saint-Laurent. However, in southern areas, including the Richelieu Valley, milder southern winds turned some of that snow into light rain. Cities like Montreal and Estrie will experience a mix of snow and rain throughout the morning, making for a messy start to the weekend. Montreal, in particular, received a good amount of snow overnight, but the precipitation is expected to taper off by mid-morning.

Now, let’s talk temperatures. It’s been a chilly night, with places like Chibougamau seeing temperatures drop to -20°C early Saturday. But here’s the twist—things might warm up slightly during the day. In southern areas, like Montreal, temperatures could climb close to 2°C, meaning some of the snow might melt, and rain could mix in at times. That said, don’t get too comfortable because colder air is expected to return later in the evening.

The biggest concern, though, is the wind. With this weather system moving in from Western Canada, strong winds are expected throughout Saturday. Gusts could reach 70 km/h in the Saint-Laurent Valley, causing blowing snow and reduced visibility, especially in central Quebec and northern areas. And once the cold air moves back in Saturday night, roads could become dangerously slippery. So, if you’re driving, be extra cautious.

Looking ahead, this isn’t the end of winter’s surprises. The week ahead brings more snow, strong winds, and fluctuating temperatures, which could impact travel and outdoor plans. If you’re heading out this weekend, make sure you dress in layers, check road conditions, and stay safe. Winter isn’t done with us yet!
