Matt Henry Strikes Again – India's Powerplay Nightmare Continues
New Zealand’s Matt Henry has once again proven why he is a menace for India in the powerplay. In the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy clash, the Kiwi pacer delivered a crucial spell, rocking the Indian top order and setting the tone for New Zealand’s bowling attack. His dominance with the new ball was on full display as he removed two of India’s biggest batting threats—Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli—early in the innings.
Henry’s record against India in ODIs, especially in the powerplay, speaks for itself. With 10 wickets in 48 overs at an impressive average of 20.20, a strike rate of 28.8, and an economy of just 4.20, he has consistently troubled the Men in Blue. And today was no different.
The match started with New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner winning the toss and opting to bowl first in Dubai. It didn’t take long for Henry to make an impact. In just the opening overs, he sent Shubman Gill back to the pavilion for a mere 2 runs. Gill, who has been in sublime form lately, was expected to provide a strong start for India, but Henry had other plans.

If that wasn’t enough, the real game-changer came when Henry dismissed the ever-reliable Virat Kohli. Kohli looked in good touch, but an acrobatic catch by Glenn Phillips at point sealed his fate. With two quick wickets, Henry put New Zealand in the driver’s seat, leaving India reeling at 78/3 after 20 overs.
At the crease, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel tried to stabilize the innings, stitching together a crucial 49-run partnership. But with a disciplined New Zealand bowling attack applying pressure, the road ahead for India looks tough.
The stakes in this match couldn’t be higher. With semi-final spots up for grabs, both teams are fighting to gain the upper hand. New Zealand has already secured wins over Pakistan and Bangladesh, while India, having defeated the same teams, is also in top form.
With the likes of Mohammed Shami, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav still to bat, India will hope to put up a competitive total. But with Henry and his fellow pacers breathing fire, it’s not going to be easy.
As the game unfolds, all eyes will be on India’s middle order and how they tackle the challenge. Will they recover and post a fighting total, or will Henry and New Zealand continue their dominance? One thing is for sure—Matt Henry has once again made his presence felt in a high-stakes clash against India.
