Meta Expands in Texas with Office Renovations and Solar Energy Commitment
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is making big moves in Texas, with two major projects underway—revamping its Downtown Austin office space and committing to solar energy from Bastrop County.

First, let’s talk about the renovations. According to filings with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), Meta is investing $2.9 million into its office on West Sixth Street in Downtown Austin. The construction is set to begin in May and is expected to wrap up by mid-July. What’s unclear, though, is whether these renovations are meant for Meta’s own employees or if they are trying to attract subtenants. This raises some interesting questions, especially since Meta has a substantial amount of unoccupied office space—around 600,000 square feet—available for sublease in the nearby 6th and Guadalupe building, which is currently the largest sublease option in Austin.
Now, shifting to the second big development—Meta’s commitment to solar energy. The company is making a significant investment in clean energy by agreeing to purchase all the power generated from the upcoming Waterloo Solar Project in Bastrop County. This solar farm, owned by German energy company RWE, is set to begin construction later this year. This move aligns with Meta’s broader efforts to support its growing operations in Texas, including a massive data center currently under construction in Temple.
