Montrose Bushfire Threatens Homes as Residents Urged to Prepare to Leave
Right now, an out-of-control bushfire is burning dangerously close to homes in Montrose, a suburb in Melbourne’s east. Firefighters are battling against erratic winds and scorching heat, making it incredibly difficult to contain the blaze.
The Country Fire Authority (CFA) has issued a Watch and Act warning for residents in Montrose and Kilsyth, urging them to prepare to leave as flames creep toward homes. The fire, which started around 2 p.m. today in Dr. Ken Leversha Reserve at the foot of the Dandenong Ranges, has already burned through more than eight hectares of bushland.

At least 40 firefighting trucks and three helicopters have been deployed to combat the flames, with crews working tirelessly to create containment lines and protect properties, particularly to the south and east of the fire. CFA Chief Officer Alen Slijepcevic emphasized that the immediate priority is ensuring the safety of residents and their homes, as strong westerly winds could further intensify the situation.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, but authorities are monitoring conditions closely. Today’s extreme heat hasn’t helped—Melbourne reached temperatures in the mid-30s, with Horsham soaring to 39 degrees. The high fire danger warning remains in place across Victoria, and while temperatures are expected to drop slightly tomorrow, the threat is far from over.
