Muslims across the world are preparing to embrace the sacred month of Ramadan, a time of fasting, prayer, and deep spiritual reflection. For many, this marks a significant period of devotion, where daily routines shift to accommodate pre-dawn meals, known as suhoor , and evening feasts, called iftar , after long hours of fasting.
This year, Sunni-majority nations, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Indonesia, and several others, have confirmed that Ramadan will commence on Saturday. The official announcement was made after the crescent moon was sighted, a traditional practice in determining the Islamic calendar. Meanwhile, Shiite-majority Iran and Morocco will begin their observance a day later, on Sunday.
Ramadan holds immense importance in the lives of Muslims, as it is not only about refraining from food and drink during daylight hours but also about strengthening one's faith, practicing patience, and showing compassion to those in need. Charity plays a vital role during this month, with many believers increasing their donations and engaging in community service to support the less fortunate.
Across different countries, Ramadan traditions take unique cultural forms. In Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation, people participate in parades and visit the graves of loved ones to pay their respects. Meanwhile, in Arab nations, bustling markets come alive as families prepare for iftar with delicious traditional dishes, sweets, and new attire for the festive celebrations ahead.
The spiritual discipline of fasting is designed to cultivate self-control and empathy by reminding believers of the struggles of the poor. But Ramadan is also a time of unity, where families and communities come together to break their fasts, pray, and reflect on their faith. Despite global challenges, the essence of Ramadan remains the same—a month of devotion, gratitude, and renewal of the soul.
