Oilers Dominate Utah with a Commanding 7-1 Victory
Wow, what a night for the Edmonton Oilers! They came out absolutely flying against the Utah Hockey Club, securing a crushing 7-1 victory. Zach Hyman was on fire, notching two goals and an assist, while goaltender Calvin Pickard stood tall with 29 saves to keep Utah at bay. The Oilers were in complete control from start to finish, showing why they’re pushing hard for that top spot in the Pacific Division.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Connor McDavid, and Mattias Ekholm each had a goal and two assists, making sure Utah never really had a chance to recover. Vasily Podkolzin and Viktor Arvidsson also contributed to the scoreboard, giving Edmonton a dominant offensive showcase. On the other side, Utah’s lone goal came from Sean Durzi, but it wasn’t nearly enough to slow down the Oilers’ relentless attack.

With just four seconds remaining, Ekholm launched a long pass out of the zone, which was skillfully tipped to McDavid by Evan Bouchard. McDavid made an absolute highlight-reel move, deking past Utah’s goalie Karel Vejmelka for his 26th goal of the season. That goal not only put Edmonton up by three but also extended McDavid’s personal point streak to 12 games. Incredibly, McDavid also became the first player in NHL history to record three-point games against 32 different teams. Talk about making history!
Utah had been playing solid hockey leading up to this game, going 6-3-2 in their last 11 matchups, but this loss was a tough one. It now leaves them four points behind in the race for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, Edmonton is closing in on first-place Vegas, sitting just two points back in the Pacific Division standings.
One surprising stat from the night? Despite the Oilers’ explosive offense, Leon Draisaitl didn’t register a point. That ended his impressive 18-game point streak, which was one of the longest in franchise history. Still, it didn’t slow Edmonton down one bit.
The Oilers have now won 10 of their last 12 home games against Western Conference opponents, sweeping the season series against Utah. With seven home games and seven road games left, all against Western Conference teams, the Oilers are looking primed for a strong finish.
Up next, Utah will look to bounce back as they host Buffalo, while Edmonton prepares for another crucial matchup at home against Winnipeg. If they keep playing like this, the Oilers could be in serious contention for the top seed. Stay tuned, because this race is heating up!
