Oscar-Winning Palestinian Filmmaker Hamdan Ballal Released After Detention
Hamdan Ballal, the Oscar-winning Palestinian director behind No Other Land , has been released from Israeli detention after a harrowing ordeal that began with an attack by settlers in the occupied West Bank. The shocking incident took place in the village of Susya, where masked settlers—some armed—stormed the area, clashing with residents just as they were breaking their Ramadan fast. Ballal, along with two other Palestinians, was violently assaulted before being taken into custody by Israeli forces.

Through the window, she saw men in uniform mercilessly beating him with rifle butts, while another individual filmed the assault. She believes the attack was a direct response to his Academy Award win, which brought global attention to the struggles of Palestinians under occupation.
The documentary No Other Land tells the story of the Palestinian residents of Masafer Yatta, who face constant threats of expulsion as the Israeli military designates their land a live-fire training zone. The film’s success on the international stage has sparked both praise and backlash, with some Israeli officials openly condemning it. Co-director Basel Adra noted that since their Oscar win, violence against Palestinian activists and civilians has intensified, with settlers emboldened by a lack of accountability.
