From producing Michael Jackson’s Thriller —still the best-selling album of all time—to arranging the legendary charity anthem We Are the World , his fingerprints are everywhere. Beyond pop and jazz, he made his mark on cinema as well, composing for films like In Cold Blood and The Color Purple while also becoming the first Black musical director at the Oscars in 1971.

The night was already historic, with Anora taking home the Best Picture award, along with Best Actress for Mikey Madison and Best Director for Sean Baker. But the tribute to Jones felt like a moment beyond the competition—a reminder of the power of music, storytelling, and legacy.
