One passenger, Jacqueline, described the moment when things took a turn. She was just about to board when she saw officers in fatigues and multiple sniffer dogs heading towards the plane. “We were just in the jetway, literally about to get on the plane, when they told us to turn around without any explanation,” she said. After being led back into the airport, she and other passengers were subjected to additional security screening, including bomb tests on their hands.
Another traveler, Josh Triemstra, initially thought it was a minor incident—perhaps just an unruly passenger. But then he saw sniffer dogs heading up the ramp into the cargo hold. “They told us there was some kind of security breach, and we all had to exit in an orderly manner. We had to line up, show our IDs and boarding passes again, and go through screening a second time,” he explained.
Passengers ended up waiting for more than four hours before WestJet finally confirmed that the flight had been canceled. Some were rebooked on later flights, while others were forced to stay overnight in Calgary. Understandably, frustration was high, but many acknowledged that safety must come first in situations like this.
