Remembering Andy Peebles: Legendary DJ and Broadcaster Passes Away at 76
Andy Peebles, the legendary BBC Radio 1 DJ and broadcaster, has passed away at the age of 76. A familiar voice in British radio for decades, Peebles was known not only for his deep love of music but also for his iconic interviews—most notably, his conversation with John Lennon just two days before the music legend was tragically murdered. His passing marks the end of an era for radio enthusiasts and music lovers alike.
Peebles’ journey in broadcasting began in the late 1960s when he worked as a nightclub DJ before transitioning to radio. His big break came in 1973 when he joined BBC Radio Manchester. Just a year later, he helped establish Piccadilly Radio, where he gained recognition for his show Soul Train . His success eventually led him to BBC Radio 1 in 1978, where he would remain a beloved presence for 14 years.

It was during this tenure that Peebles conducted what would become one of the most historic interviews in music history—his three-hour conversation with John Lennon in December 1980. Reflecting on that moment years later, Peebles admitted he had never been so nervous, having grown up idolizing The Beatles. Tragically, just two days after the interview, Lennon was shot and killed in New York. That conversation remains one of the last and most in-depth glimpses into the mind of the legendary musician.
Beyond his work in radio, Peebles was a recognizable figure on Top of the Pops and even played a role in the historic Live Aid concert in 1985, introducing artists like David Bowie and Spandau Ballet. His career extended beyond the BBC, as he later joined British Forces Broadcasting Service and BBC World Service, continuing to share his passion for music with audiences worldwide.
Tributes have poured in from fellow broadcasters and fans alike. His friend and former colleague Mike Read expressed his devastation at the news, calling Peebles “a lovely man and a great broadcaster” while paying homage to his deep knowledge of both music and cricket. Tony Blackburn, another Radio 1 veteran, also shared his sadness, remembering Peebles as a cherished figure in the industry.
Andy Peebles’ contributions to radio and music journalism are immeasurable. His voice, his passion, and his ability to connect with audiences and artists alike made him a true broadcasting icon. He leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations to come.
