Remembering Clive Revill: The Original Voice of Emperor Palpatine
Clive Revill, the legendary New Zealand-born actor known for his incredible versatility and iconic roles, has passed away at the age of 94. A man of many talents, Revill had a career that spanned over six decades, leaving an indelible mark on both stage and screen.
For many Star Wars fans, Revill’s name is forever tied to the original voice of Emperor Palpatine in The Empire Strikes Back (1980). Though his voice was later replaced in subsequent releases, his portrayal of the sinister Sith Lord in the film's original cut remains legendary. He once recalled how fans would ask him to recite his chilling line, “There is a great disturbance in the Force,” and watching their reactions was always a delight.
Born in Wellington, New Zealand, on April 18, 1930, Clive Selsby Revill had a unique journey into acting. Initially working as an actuary in a bank, he discovered his passion for theater when he encountered legendary actor Laurence Olivier and his wife, Vivien Leigh. Encouraged by Olivier, he moved to England to study at the Old Vic Theatre School. This decision changed his life forever, leading him to become a prominent member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and a two-time Tony Award nominee for his Broadway performances in Irma la Douce and Oliver!

Beyond Star Wars , Revill's extensive career saw him play roles in a variety of films and television shows. He worked with legendary director Billy Wilder in The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970) and Avanti! (1972), earning a Golden Globe nomination for the latter. His ability to transform into different characters made him a sought-after talent in Hollywood, appearing in The Legend of Hell House (1973), Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993), and Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995).
On television, Revill’s presence was just as significant. He appeared in classic shows such as Columbo , Murder, She Wrote , MacGyver , Babylon 5 , and Star Trek: The Next Generation . His voice acting extended beyond Star Wars , as he famously voiced Alfred Pennyworth in Batman: The Animated Series (1992) and participated in numerous video game adaptations of Star Wars .
Sadly, Clive Revill passed away on March 11, 2025, in a care facility in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, after battling dementia. His daughter, Kate Revill, confirmed the news, and tributes have since poured in from fans and colleagues alike. Many remember him not just for his performances but for his kindness and storytelling ability, always willing to share moments from his illustrious career.
Revill leaves behind a legacy that few can match. Whether it was on stage, in films, or through the power of his voice, he captivated audiences worldwide. His contributions to the entertainment industry will be remembered for generations to come. Rest in peace, Clive Revill.
