Sean Baker Unveils the Inspiration Behind Oscar-Winning Film Anora

In a recent revelation, Baker shared that Anora was a story that had been brewing in his mind for quite some time. His long-time collaborator, Karren Karagulian, played a significant role in shaping the concept. Baker had been searching for the perfect vehicle for Karagulian, and his deep ties to the Russian-speaking community made the film's setting feel authentic and natural. As Baker put it, “I knew I wanted to do a story about the Russian-speaking populations in Brighton Beach and Coney Island. With Karren’s connections to that community, the story naturally evolved over a year.”
At the heart of Anora “I knew that I wanted to show the home invasion taking place in real-time in the middle of the film. Everything else in the screenplay was built around that moment—how we got there and how it resolved.”

The film's titular role, played by Mikey Madison, was a choice that Baker made with careful consideration. Madison, who previously caught Baker’s eye in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Scream V , impressed the director with her ability to portray raw emotions and make daring acting choices. “She has this incredible talent to shift emotions instantly. Her sense of humor, her ability to make brave choices—it all made her the perfect Anora,” Baker explained. Madison, in turn, was thrilled when she got the call. “I was floored when Sean wanted to meet me. I’m a big fan of his work, and I immediately said yes. It felt like the opportunity of a lifetime,” she shared.
So, what is Anora about? The film follows the journey of a young sex worker from Brooklyn who unexpectedly finds herself living a fairytale when she marries the son of a Russian oligarch.
