Severe Weather Alert: Strong Storms and High Winds Tonight

Alright, folks, we have an active weather situation developing, and it’s important to stay alert as we head into the night. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for most of southeastern Wisconsin, remaining in effect until 4 a.m. The only counties excluded are Fond du Lac and Sheboygan, but for everyone else, conditions are favorable for strong to severe thunderstorms.

Now, let’s talk about what’s happening. These storms are coming in from northern Illinois and are working their way into southern Wisconsin. While there is a possibility of hail up to one inch in diameter, the biggest threat tonight is the wind. We’re talking about gusts reaching or exceeding 58 mph , which is already being reported along the storm’s path. Some areas may even see isolated tornado activity , so make sure you’re staying weather-aware.

In terms of timing, expect these storms to start rolling into western counties—like Walworth and Jefferson—around 11 p.m. to midnight. From there, they’ll push eastward, reaching more central locations by 1 a.m. and moving towards Lake Michigan between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. This timing is slightly later than initially expected, but the storms are still carrying a strong punch.

One interesting factor with this system is that it’s very dynamic, meaning it has the potential to produce damaging straight-line winds even without much lightning. Even after the thunderstorms pass, strong winds will persist into Saturday. Expect gusts between 40 and 60 mph throughout the morning and into the afternoon. For Milwaukee, Waukesha, and areas southward, a High Wind Warning is in effect from 7 a.m. until noon, with the potential for power outages and downed trees. A Wind Advisory covers the rest of southeastern Wisconsin until 5 p.m.

Saturday will still be windy, but we’ll get a little sunshine here and there. Temperatures will be unseasonably warm , reaching the upper 50s to near 60 degrees. However, by Sunday, expect a big cooldown, with highs dropping into the 40s and the chance for some snow showers .

Looking ahead into next week, Monday and Tuesday appear calm with highs in the 50s, but Wednesday could bring another round of wet weather—possibly rain transitioning into snow as temperatures drop.

Bottom line: Stay prepared tonight. Keep an eye on weather alerts, secure loose outdoor items, and have a plan in place in case of power outages. These storms are moving fast and carrying significant wind energy, so it’s crucial to stay informed and safe.

We’ll keep you updated as conditions develop, so stay tuned and take the necessary precautions!
