Shreyas Iyer Praises Ricky Ponting Ahead of IPL 2025 Reunion
Excitement is brewing as the Punjab Kings gear up for the much-anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, and one of the biggest talking points is the reunion of Shreyas Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting. Iyer, who has been appointed as the captain of Punjab Kings, has nothing but admiration for Ponting, emphasizing how the legendary Australian mentor has always instilled immense confidence in him.
Speaking at a media interaction in Chandigarh on March 18, Iyer shared his experience of working with Ponting, stating, "He supports everyone. When I first worked with him in the past, he made me feel like I am a great player and that I can easily excel in this format. The confidence he gives a player is at an entirely different level." Such high praise coming from Iyer is a testament to the impact Ponting has on his players.

With IPL 2025 just around the corner, Punjab Kings have set their eyes on the ultimate prize: the IPL trophy. "The goal is to win the trophy. That’s our mindset right now, but it’s a step-by-step process. You don’t just wake up one day and achieve it. The way we are practicing, the wavelength we are sharing, and the camaraderie in the team—it’s all going really well," Iyer said confidently.
Interestingly, both Iyer and Ponting are new to the Punjab Kings setup this year, but their familiarity from their time at Delhi Capitals will certainly play a crucial role in shaping the team’s strategy. Ponting, too, had glowing words for Iyer, calling him a great human being and a natural leader. "He is an IPL-winning captain. We could not have asked for more. He has just joined the camp a couple of days ago, but he is already making his mark as a leader. I couldn’t be happier," Ponting remarked.
Ponting, a two-time World Cup-winning captain, further emphasized the balance within the squad, stating, "We have a really good mix of youth and experience. There are high-quality Indian players along with some outstanding overseas players. The squad has come together really well. Our first training session last night was fantastic, and the boys are putting in great effort."
As Punjab Kings prepare for their season opener against Gujarat Titans on March 25 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the excitement among fans is palpable. The team will then play two home games at the newly-built PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh against Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings.
With Iyer’s leadership and Ponting’s guidance, Punjab Kings are shaping up to be a formidable force in IPL 2025. Will this dynamic duo lead the franchise to their first-ever IPL title? Fans will eagerly be watching as the action unfolds!
