Son Heung-min Calls for Spurs Wake-Up Ahead of Crucial Second Leg

Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has made it clear—Spurs need to wake up, and fast. After a disappointing 1-0 loss to AZ Alkmaar in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie, Son didn't hold back, calling the performance "nowhere near" what the team is capable of. And with next week's return leg at home now shaping up to be their biggest game of the season, Spurs simply can't afford another lackluster display.

The game in the Netherlands was frustrating for Tottenham. An unfortunate own goal from Lucas Bergvall handed AZ the win, but beyond that, Spurs just didn’t look like themselves. They struggled to create chances, lacked sharpness in attack, and seemed unable to build any real momentum. Son, speaking to TNT Sports after the match, admitted that everyone—including himself—was deeply disappointed with the performance.

"It's a big wake-up call because next week is the biggest game of the season," Son said. "We didn't create anything in the first half, we were sloppy, not performing the way we should. There are no excuses—we were not good enough. But it's just 1-0, it's not over. Next week, we have to be much better."

Manager Ange Postecoglou echoed Son's frustration, admitting that Spurs were second-best in almost every aspect of the game. He pointed out that the team struggled both with and without the ball, failing to impose themselves on the game. However, he remains hopeful, emphasizing that playing at home will give Tottenham a chance to turn things around.

Spurs fans will be hoping he's right. Their Europa League campaign is now their only realistic shot at silverware this season, with their Premier League form faltering and domestic cup exits already behind them. The pressure is on, and failure to progress could raise serious questions about the direction of the team under Postecoglou.

One added concern for Spurs is the fitness of striker Dominic Solanke, who came on as a substitute but had to be taken off late due to injury. With key players needing to step up, losing another attacking option would be a major setback.

But for now, the focus is clear—Tottenham must respond. The second leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will be a defining moment in their season. Son has sent the warning. Now, it's up to the team to deliver.
