South Africa Crushes England to Storm into Champions Trophy Semifinals
What a dominant display from South Africa! The Proteas have stormed into the semifinals of the Champions Trophy with a commanding seven-wicket victory over England. Rassie van der Dussen led from the front, scoring an unbeaten 72 off 87 balls, guiding his team to a comfortable win in Karachi. With this victory, South Africa topped Group B, finishing with two wins and a washed-out game, securing their place in the next stage of the tournament.
England, on the other hand, had a tournament to forget. Already eliminated after consecutive losses to Australia and Afghanistan, they looked out of sorts once again. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, England crumbled to just 179 runs in 38.2 overs. Their batting lineup seemed uninterested, struggling against South Africa’s disciplined bowling attack. Marco Jansen and Wiaan Mulder were the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets each. Jansen finished with 3-39 in seven overs, while Mulder delivered an even more impressive spell, taking 3-25 in 7.2 overs.

Chasing 180 was never going to be a tough task for the Proteas, and they made it look even easier. Van der Dussen anchored the innings brilliantly, ensuring there were no unnecessary hiccups. South Africa cruised to 181-3 in just 29.1 overs, sealing the win in emphatic fashion. This result also meant that Afghanistan was knocked out of the tournament, finishing third in the group.
For England, this loss marked the end of a disastrous campaign. Three games, three defeats, and no wins—a shocking outcome for a team that had high expectations. The disappointing run also signaled the end of Jos Buttler’s tenure as captain. Buttler had already announced that he would step down following England’s early exit, capping off a rough period that included failures in both the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup.
With South Africa through, Australia also secured their semifinal spot from Group B. They now await the outcome of the India vs. New Zealand clash, which will determine their opponent in the next round. The Champions Trophy is heating up, and the semifinals promise to be thrilling!
