Swimmer Bitten by Tiger Shark at Fremantle’s Sandtrax Beach
Picture this: a sunny afternoon at Sandtrax Beach near Fremantle Port, the perfect setting for a refreshing swim. But what was meant to be a routine dip turned into a terrifying encounter when a swimmer was bitten by a tiger shark just 40 meters off the groyne.
According to reports, the attack happened around 2:30 PM on Wednesday. The swimmer, who was enjoying the warm waters, suddenly found himself face-to-face with a 1.5-meter tiger shark. Witnesses say the shark bumped him multiple times before sinking its teeth into his foot. Imagine the panic, the rush of adrenaline as he struggled to escape.

Luckily, help was nearby. A group of people on a recreational boat noticed the swimmer in distress, waving his arms frantically for help. Without hesitation, they rushed over and pulled him aboard. But the ordeal wasn’t over yet—the shark continued circling the boat, a chilling reminder of how close the encounter had been.
Authorities swiftly responded to the incident. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) issued a shark warning, and Sandtrax Beach was closed to ensure public safety. However, nearby Port Beach remained open, with officials closely monitoring the situation.
Despite the attack, beachgoers were seen returning to the water later in the afternoon, some even riding jet skis just offshore. With Perth’s scorching 38-degree heat, it’s no surprise that people were eager to cool off. However, the event serves as a stark reminder that we share these waters with marine life, and caution is always necessary.
The injured swimmer received medical treatment at a local doctor’s surgery and is expected to recover. While shark encounters like this are rare, they highlight the unpredictable nature of the ocean and the importance of staying vigilant while enjoying its beauty.
