Tragic Crash at Avalon Airshow Leaves Pilot Critically Injured
Ladies and gentlemen, today we bring you some heartbreaking news from the Avalon Australian International Airshow, where an aerobatic performance took a devastating turn. A Pitts Special aerobatic aircraft, part of the renowned Paul Bennet Airshows team, crashed during a demonstration flight, leaving the pilot in critical condition.
The tragic incident occurred at approximately 5:15 PM on the first public day of the event. Witnesses watched in horror as the aircraft attempted a loop maneuver but failed to recover in time, ultimately crashing into the tarmac. The pilot, a man in his 50s and the sole occupant of the aircraft, sustained life-threatening injuries and was swiftly airlifted to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Eyewitnesses described the terrifying moment the plane hit the ground. Andrew Pearce, a spectator in the crowd, recounted that the plane did not simply nosedive but appeared to land on its belly with its wings crumpled. Another spectator, Geoff Crane, noted that dirt and debris flew up upon impact, and the crowd let out a collective gasp.

Emergency responders acted quickly. Pyrotechnicians on site were the first to reach the scene, followed by aviation firefighters and paramedics, who fought to stabilize the injured pilot. Despite the shocking nature of the crash, it occurred at a significant distance from spectators, ensuring no other injuries were reported.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has launched a full investigation into the crash, with specialists set to analyze flight tracking data, weather conditions, and the aircraft’s maintenance records. Authorities are also requesting any available footage from witnesses to aid in their investigation.
The Avalon Airshow immediately suspended the rest of the day's events out of respect for the injured pilot and to allow investigators unrestricted access to the crash site. Organizers have since stated that they are reviewing the situation and will determine if the show can safely proceed in the coming days.
The Paul Bennet Airshows team is a well-respected name in the aviation community, known for their breathtaking formation flying and high-adrenaline stunts. This year’s show was particularly special, featuring Paul Bennet’s son, Jett, who is the youngest aerobatic pilot in Australia. Just hours before the crash, Jett spoke about his passion for inspiring the next generation of aviators. Now, the aviation world is rallying behind their team, sending thoughts and prayers to the injured pilot and his family.
