Allianz Stadium Debate Heats Up as Souths Push for Return

So, the big debate in the NRL right now is all about Allianz Stadium and whether South Sydney Rabbitohs should make it their home again. And let me tell you, it’s getting pretty heated!

Rugby league legend Andrew Johns has thrown his support behind Souths moving back to Moore Park, saying it just makes sense. For years, the club has been playing out of Accor Stadium, but let’s be real—it’s not exactly the most convenient spot. Fans have been complaining for ages about the travel time, and Johns made a solid point when he said getting across town to Accor on a Friday night is, well, a nightmare. And when you see the stadium on TV, it’s often nowhere near full, which doesn’t help the atmosphere at all.

The push for the move has been building momentum, and reports suggest a decision could be coming soon. If it happens, it would mean both the Rabbitohs and their historic rivals, the Roosters, would be sharing Allianz Stadium. Now, that’s where things get interesting. Roosters coach Trent Robinson isn’t too thrilled about the idea. He made it very clear that Allianz is, and always will be, the Roosters’ home. According to him, Souths made their choice to leave years ago, and while he understands that stadiums are a business, he doesn’t see them ever truly claiming it as their own.

It’s not just the Roosters and Rabbitohs who would be using the stadium either. The Waratahs and Sydney FC also call Allianz home, which means that pitch would see a lot of action throughout the year. Johns suggested an alternative—why not build a smaller, boutique stadium in the south of Sydney? He even threw out La Perouse or Botany as potential locations. A 20,000-seat venue near the airport could ease some of the congestion at Allianz and give Souths their own space.

For now, though, Souths remain locked into an agreement with Accor Stadium until 2030, but they’ve already been in talks with the NSW Government about making the switch. The deal with Accor was originally made with the expectation that the stadium would receive major upgrades, but since those haven’t happened, the Rabbitohs are looking for a way out.

So, what happens next? Well, if the government agrees, we could see South Sydney back in Moore Park sooner rather than later. But one thing’s for sure—the Roosters won’t be giving up their claim on Allianz without a fight.

Stay tuned, because this is one NRL debate that’s far from over!
