Crows Dig Deep to Edge Out Giants in Wet Weather Arm Wrestle
What a gritty clash that was! Adelaide and GWS locked horns in a round six showdown that was more of a battle of resilience than flair. The Crows managed to outlast the Giants in a real scrap at Adelaide Oval, eventually claiming an 18-point win in front of over 40,000 fans. It wasn’t pretty, but boy was it important.
The Crows took control early, jumping out to a 3.2 to 0.3 lead by the first break. Taylor Walker, Riley Thilthorpe and Ben Keays got the ball rolling with goals that gave Adelaide the upper hand, while GWS just couldn’t find their groove. The first half, honestly, was a bit of a grind. The wind was all over the place, both teams were turning the ball over, and it was a frustrating watch at times with just four goals kicked in two quarters.
Then came the third quarter — and the rain. As the heavens opened, the game turned into an absolute slog. But Adelaide showed their grit. Max Michalanney gave the home crowd a moment to remember with his first career goal in his 51st AFL game, a cracking long-range bomb that sparked the Crows into life. It was exactly what the match needed — a real momentum shifter.

GWS did fight back through Darcy Jones, but Adelaide had answers. Alex Neal-Bullen, who was fantastic all game, snapped truly under pressure, and Tex Walker capitalised on a gift deep in defence. Those two quick goals created a buffer that the Giants just couldn’t reel in, despite having some huge individual efforts.
Jordan Dawson was immense again — 27 disposals, eight tackles, nine inside 50s — just everywhere when it counted. Matt Crouch backed him up brilliantly in the guts with 26 touches. Neal-Bullen added 20 of his own and a crucial goal, while Michalanney and Rory Laird were rocks in defence. The effort across the board was just top-notch.
On the flip side, GWS were missing a real target up forward with Jesse Hogan out. They had the top four possession winners on the ground — Whitfield (39), Green (36), Ash (29), Callaghan (28) — but it didn’t convert into scoreboard pressure. Too many wasted opportunities and some key turnovers killed their momentum. Josh Kelly did give the Giants something to cheer with a stunning goal off his non-preferred foot, but those moments were too rare.
The Crows are now sitting comfortably in fifth with a 4-2 record, keeping pace with the early contenders. Sure, it was scrappy, wet, and frustrating at times, but these are the games that build belief. Winning ugly still counts — and Adelaide will take it every day of the week.
Final score: Adelaide 7.10 (52) defeated GWS 4.10 (34).
