Flames Rally in Thrilling Comeback to Defeat Avalanche in Shootout
What a game in Denver! The Calgary Flames pulled off an electrifying comeback against the Colorado Avalanche, rallying from a two-goal deficit in the third period and securing a dramatic 3-2 shootout victory. This win not only snapped Calgary’s seven-game losing streak against the Avalanche but also kept their playoff hopes alive.
Things weren’t looking great for the Flames early on. The Avalanche took control, with Cale Makar opening the scoring in the first period and Logan O’Connor doubling the lead. Colorado looked dominant, and with Calgary trailing 2-0 entering the third, the odds seemed stacked against them.
But hockey is a game of momentum swings, and Calgary’s fourth line delivered when it mattered most. In a stunning 32-second span, Ryan Lomberg and Adam Klapka found the back of the net, tying the game with just over eight minutes left. That surge of energy completely shifted the tone of the contest.

Goaltender Dan Vladar was a rock for the Flames, making 28 saves through regulation and overtime. He then turned away all three Colorado shooters in the shootout, capping off a phenomenal performance. And when it came time for the game-winner, Yegor Sharangovich stepped up. Despite being 0-for-4 in shootouts this season, he buried his opportunity, sealing the comeback victory for Calgary.
Flames coach Ryan Huska credited the team’s resilience and energy, especially highlighting the impact of the fourth line. “They were the difference-maker, and our goaltender was really good for us as well tonight,” Huska said.
With nine games remaining, Calgary sits five points out of a wild-card spot. Every win counts, and performances like this prove that they’re not giving up without a fight. As Vladar put it, “Believe, believe, believe. That’s all we got.”
Meanwhile, for the Avalanche, this loss marked their second consecutive home defeat, an unusual sight for a team that had an 11-game home winning streak earlier this season. Nathan MacKinnon extended his home point streak to 25 games with an assist on Makar’s goal, but it wasn’t enough to secure the victory.
Up next, the Flames head to Utah to face the newly minted Utah Hockey Club, while the Avalanche will try to bounce back against the Chicago Blackhawks.
What a game, what a comeback—this is what makes hockey so thrilling!
