Hey everyone, so there’s been a lot of buzz lately around ICBC – and not in a good way. If you or someone you know has been trying to book a road test recently, you’ve probably already run into this issue. ICBC has publicly apologized to customers after complaints have piled up about the extremely long wait times for driver’s tests. We're talking delays as long as seven months just to get a testing appointment in some areas. That’s basically half a year of waiting just to get your license. Understandably, people are frustrated.

Now, the issue isn’t entirely out of nowhere. ICBC says the demand for road tests has shot up over the past year, especially since late 2024. On top of that, they’re dealing with a serious shortage of driver examiners, which has only made the backlog worse. Some people are even resorting to waking up super early every day, just to check for last-minute cancellations online. Others are traveling far out of their cities to find smaller testing centres with fewer bookings. That’s a lot of stress and inconvenience just to get behind the wheel.

Greg Harper, a spokesperson for ICBC, has acknowledged the problem and says they’re actively working on solutions. Right now, they’ve brought in more examiners, with 10 new hires already onboard and plans to hire at least 10 more. They're also having current staff work overtime to boost test availability, especially in high-demand areas like the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. He emphasized that availability should start improving within the next couple of months.

But Harper also pointed out something a lot of people might not realize – around half of all customers fail their first test. That means a huge number of people are rebooking, which clogs up the system even more. So ICBC is encouraging everyone to study up and take the test seriously the first time around, which could help ease the pressure for everyone.

For now, though, if you’re waiting on a road test or planning to book one soon, be prepared for possible delays. It’s not ideal, but at least ICBC is owning the issue and making moves to fix it. Hopefully we’ll start seeing some improvements sooner rather than later.
