Late-Season Winter Storm Blankets Michigan’s UP With Over 8 Inches of Snow
Let me tell you—it may be mid-April, but it sure doesn’t feel like it in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Just when we thought we were in the clear and spring was finally pushing winter aside, this surprise snowstorm rolled in and gave us a frosty reminder that winter doesn't give up easily around here.
Over the past couple of days, parts of the UP got absolutely hammered by snow, with some areas seeing more than 8 inches fall in a pretty short period. The heaviest totals came out of Twin Lakes, clocking in at a whopping 8.2 inches. Painesdale and Herman weren’t far behind with 6 inches each. Even spots like Hancock, Ironwood, and Bessemer saw snow pile up between 4 and 5.5 inches. That’s no light dusting, especially this late in the season.

The National Weather Service wasn’t taking any chances—they issued winter weather advisories, wind advisories, and even gale warnings for surrounding lakes. Winds have been howling across the region, with gusts hitting up to 45 mph, especially along Lake Superior. That’s strong enough to kick up some serious blowing snow, making travel pretty tricky and creating that classic wind-chill bite that makes 30-degree weather feel like the teens.
This system didn’t just stop with the UP either. Northern parts of Lower Michigan—from Traverse City to Mackinac City—also found themselves under winter weather advisories. Even areas as far south as Detroit and Ann Arbor might catch a glimpse of snowflakes. It’s that weird time of year where we’re juggling sunshine one minute and slushy roads the next.
Now, the good news: the storm is winding down. By the night of April 16, high pressure is moving in, and things should start calming down. But today? Today’s still a mess—snow showers are tapering off, but the wind remains brutal and temps are stuck in the 30s and 40s, with wind chills dipping into the 20s. It’s the kind of day where you regret putting away the winter coat, thinking spring was finally here.
So yeah, if you’re anywhere near the UP—or even the northern LP—don’t be too surprised by this wintry punch. One more snowy hiccup before we (hopefully) settle into real spring. Fingers crossed this is the last we’ll see of it until November.
