Major Delays on M40 as Air Ambulance Responds to Serious Crash
Hey everyone, just wanted to give you a quick update on the situation that’s been unfolding on the M40 today—and it's a serious one.
Earlier this morning, around 7:30am, a major crash took place on the M40 northbound between Junction 13 at Bishops Tachbrook and Junction 14 at Barford, near the Oxfordshire and Warwickshire border. The collision involved two vehicles and caused an immediate response from emergency services. Warwickshire Police were on the scene quickly, and the road was closed entirely to allow them and other responders—including an air ambulance—to safely manage the situation.

Now, if you were on the road this morning, you probably noticed something was wrong pretty quickly. Drivers found themselves stuck in queues stretching back miles. One eyewitness named Emma was stranded herself, waiting for the RAC due to a flat battery, and she described hearing a loud "thud" before seeing Highways officers sprinting toward the crash site. That’s when the severity of the accident really hit her.
The air ambulance landing near the site was a stark reminder of how serious this incident was. Thankfully, emergency teams were able to secure the area quickly, but the motorway was expected to stay shut for several hours. Police advised everyone to completely avoid that section of the M40 if at all possible, and to follow diversions.
Photos from the scene showed police actively managing traffic, with large road signs indicating indefinite halts. Drivers were urged to be patient, and many reported delays stretching over two hours. By midday, National Highways confirmed that while the scene had been cleared and the road had reopened, residual delays remained—and just when things started easing up, another incident caused closures once again later in the day. Talk about a rough commute!
It’s a clear reminder of how unpredictable things can get on the road. Whether you’re heading out for work or planning a weekend trip, always check traffic alerts and have a backup route ready. And please, if you’re approaching an area with emergency services, slow down and give them space to work safely.
Hope everyone involved is okay, and that traffic returns to normal soon. Stay safe out there, folks.
