NASA Astronaut Jonny Kim Heads to Space in Historic Crew Launch

Early Tuesday morning, April 8, at exactly 1:47 a.m. Eastern time, Jonny Kim launched aboard the Roscosmos Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. He’s not going solo, of course. Joining him on this journey to the International Space Station are two seasoned Roscosmos cosmonauts, Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky. Together, they’re heading up to join Expedition 72/73, marking the beginning of an eight-month mission that’s all about pushing science and exploration further than ever before.

By 5:03 a.m., the spacecraft docked to the station’s Prichal module, and shortly after, the hatches were opened to welcome the crew aboard.
On the ISS, Kim and his fellow space travelers will team up with astronauts from around the globe—including NASA’s Nichole Ayers, Anne McClain, and Don Pettit, JAXA’s Takuya Onishi, and Roscosmos crew members Alexey Ovchinin, Kirill Peskov, and Ivan Vagner.
