Will Day’s Injury Blow Leaves Hawthorn Reeling in 2025 Season

Hey footy fans, tough news out of Hawthorn this week – and if you’re a Hawks supporter, you might want to brace yourself for this one. Star midfielder Will Day has been ruled out for potentially up to four months after scans revealed a stress fracture in his foot. It’s a frustrating setback for the 23-year-old, who had only just started to build momentum this season after already missing time last year with the same injury.

It all unfolded after a routine training session over the bye weekend. Day reported some foot soreness, and further scans confirmed everyone's worst fears – another stress fracture in the navicular bone of his foot. It’s the same foot he injured in January 2024, so there’s an added layer of concern there. Surgery is now on the cards, and although it’s not what anyone hoped for, it’s the most reliable way to not only heal the current fracture but also help prevent similar issues going forward.

Will was sitting equal eighth in the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year Award, averaging an impressive 23 disposals, over 12 contested possessions, and more than 5 clearances a game. That’s a huge presence to lose in Hawthorn’s midfield, especially with such a young and developing team around him. His absence will undoubtedly shift the dynamics on the field.

Now, let’s not forget – this isn’t Day’s first rodeo with injury. He had shoulder surgery last October after missing the finals with a collarbone issue, so the guy’s had a rough run. But if there’s one thing you can’t question about Will Day, it’s his resilience. Hawthorn’s executive team and his teammates have already rallied behind him, and the belief is strong that he’ll be back before the season’s end.

In the meantime, the Hawks will be looking to other key players to step up in Day’s absence. There’s a bit of good news though – James Worpel is set to return for the Gather Round clash against Port Adelaide, which should offer some midfield support.

Still, losing Will Day for a big chunk of the year is a serious blow to Sam Mitchell’s 2025 campaign. The kid was on fire, and his skill, pace, and footy IQ are hard to replace. But if Day’s determination is anything to go by, expect him to attack his rehab like he would a contested ball – full-on and fearless. Here's hoping we see him back in the brown and gold sooner rather than later.
