Ovechkin’s OT Dagger Halts Canadiens' Comeback in Game 1 Thriller

Man, what a game that was last night between the Canadiens and the Capitals. Game 1 of the series had everything you could ask for—momentum swings, physical play, clutch performances—and even a dramatic overtime finish. Unfortunately for Habs fans, it ended in heartbreak, but it’s hard not to admire the fight this team showed.

It all started with a bit of a shaky opening. The Canadiens were on their heels early as Washington came out flying. Alex Ovechkin, doing what he does best, opened the scoring late in the first period with a power-play goal. Then in the second, Anthony Beauvillier made it 2-0 for the Caps, and at that point, it looked like the game might be slipping away for Montreal.

But give the Habs credit—they didn’t back down. In the third period, they found another gear. Cole Caufield, always dangerous on the power play, buried one midway through the frame to cut the deficit to 2-1. Then just five minutes later, Nick Suzuki finished off a slick play to tie it up. You could feel the momentum shift. Montreal was buzzing, outshooting the Capitals and bringing serious pressure as the period wound down.

Samuel Montembeault was solid in net, keeping the Habs in it with 29 saves. He made some key stops that gave the team a chance to complete the comeback.

But then came overtime. Just a couple of minutes in, Ovechkin struck again. A quick transition, a setup from Beauvillier and Strome, and just like that, it was game over. Washington takes Game 1, 3-2.

It’s a tough pill to swallow, no doubt. But there are plenty of positives to take from this game if you're a Montreal fan. The comeback effort, the energy in the third, the way they pushed back—those are signs of a team that isn’t going away quietly.

Now, all eyes are on Game 2, set for Wednesday at Capital One Arena. The Canadiens will need to come out stronger from the start and build on what they did in the third period. This series is far from over, and if Game 1 is any indication, we’re in for one heck of a ride.
