Piastri Shines in Jeddah to Become New F1 Championship Leader
What a race we just witnessed in Jeddah! The 2025 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix brought high drama under the lights, and at the end of 50 intense laps, Oscar Piastri emerged victorious. The McLaren driver not only clinched his third win of the season but also took the lead in the Drivers' Championship standings—becoming the first Australian to do so since Mark Webber 15 years ago. It’s been an electric start to the season, and Piastri is proving he’s not just here to compete—he’s here to win.
From the moment the lights went out at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, it was game on. Piastri lined up on the front row beside polesitter Max Verstappen, and the two went wheel-to-wheel right from the start. Things got spicy fast—Verstappen cut across Turn 1 a bit too aggressively, which landed him a five-second time penalty after the stewards reviewed the incident. That moment would ultimately define the race outcome. Piastri kept his cool, tucked in just behind Max, and waited for the race to come to him.

As the pit window opened, strategy became the name of the game. Verstappen took his penalty during his stop, and that allowed Piastri to leap ahead and take control. From there, he was clinical—managing tyres, navigating traffic, and staying out of trouble. The Aussie looked completely at home in the lead, eventually crossing the line 2.8 seconds ahead of Verstappen. It was a calculated, mature drive from someone who’s starting to look more like a world champion with every race.
Behind the top two, Charles Leclerc drove a strong race to grab Ferrari’s first podium of the season, finishing third. Lando Norris put in a gritty recovery drive after starting 10th—climbing his way up to a well-earned fourth. He had to battle hard with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, showing some brilliant overtakes along the way. Russell settled for fifth while his young Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli came in sixth—another solid outing for the rookie.
Elsewhere, the midfield was buzzing with battles. Carlos Sainz brought home a solid eighth for Williams, followed by Alex Albon, who held off Isack Hadjar in the final laps to secure P9. Hadjar rounded out the top ten, scoring another point for Racing Bulls. Unfortunately, Fernando Alonso once again missed out on points, finishing P11 in what’s been a frustrating start to 2025 for the veteran.
But the story of the day belongs to Piastri. After a rocky qualifying where Verstappen claimed pole, it was Oscar’s racecraft and cool under pressure that made the difference. “It was a pretty tough race,” he admitted after stepping out of the car. “The start made the difference. I knew I had to go for it, and from there, we managed things really well.” You can tell he’s growing into the role of title contender, and McLaren is giving him the car to back it up.
With the Miami Grand Prix up next, Piastri leads the championship by 10 points over teammate Norris. The momentum is with McLaren, but with Verstappen lurking and Ferrari showing signs of resurgence, we’re in for a thrilling season. If Jeddah was any indicator, buckle up—this fight is just getting started.
