Reddit Goes Dark: Global Outage Sends Users Into a Frenzy

Hey everyone, so you probably noticed something weird today — Reddit, yes that Reddit, the social news platform we all turn to for everything from memes to market updates, just went down. And not just for a few people — we’re talking thousands of users all around the world. If you tried to load a subreddit and were met with endless loading screens or weird error messages, you’re definitely not alone.

So here’s what happened. Sometime around 11:39 a.m. ET on April 21, the outage tracking site Downdetector picked up a huge spike in reports. We’re talking over 112,000 users all reporting issues — either with the Reddit app not loading or the website just refusing to cooperate. Reddit quickly acknowledged it on their official status page, saying they were “investigating elevated errors.” Basically, their way of saying, “Yep, something’s wrong and we’re on it.”

Now, what made this even crazier is that it wasn’t just Reddit having issues. CrowdStrike and Amazon Web Services (AWS) — two massive players in cybersecurity and cloud hosting — also started showing signs of outages. That’s when things really started to snowball, and people naturally started wondering if something bigger was going on. Easter Monday, no less — not the kind of holiday surprise anyone was hoping for.

Reddit did act fast though. By around 12:10 p.m. ET, they rolled out a fix. And from what it looks like, the number of users still reporting issues started to drop quickly — from over 100,000 at the peak to just around 2,000 soon after the fix went live. For some users, things started working again almost immediately, while others had to wait a little longer for the dust to settle.

Still, no official word yet on what exactly caused the outage. The last time Reddit went down big like this — back in November — it was due to a bug in a recent update. Could this be something similar? Maybe. Or maybe it’s something related to those other services going down at the same time. Either way, Reddit hasn’t shared those juicy details yet.

All in all, it was a weird and slightly chaotic start to the week for Redditors everywhere. But hey, the platform seems to be bouncing back now, so if you're refreshing your favorite threads or meme pages and they're loading again — you’re not dreaming. Reddit lives! Let’s just hope it stays that way for a while.
