San Diego Zoo Elephants React as Earthquake Shakes Southern California

Hey everyone, just wanted to share something wild that happened recently right here in Southern California. If you felt the ground rumble on Monday morning, you weren’t alone. A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck near Julian at 10:08 a.m., and it sent tremors rolling all the way from San Diego up to Los Angeles. I mean, it was enough to make coffee cups rattle and definitely wake up anyone still hitting snooze.

Now, what really caught attention — and kind of went viral — was the reaction from the San Diego Zoo’s elephants. Yeah, the elephants! They apparently sensed the quake before it hit. According to people at the zoo, a few of the elephants suddenly started acting alert, moving nervously, and vocalizing just moments before the shaking started. It’s not super surprising when you think about how sensitive animals are to seismic activity, but seeing it happen in real-time is still pretty incredible.

Experts say this quake was pretty deep, about 13 kilometers underground, and was connected to the Elsinore fault line. There was even a smaller 3.3 magnitude foreshock the day before — kind of like a warning shot. Dr. Lucy Jones, a well-known seismologist, mentioned that there's always a chance a quake like this could be a precursor to a bigger one — not something you want to hear, but it's reality here in California.

Luckily, there haven't been any major reports of damage or injuries, and Governor Newsom’s office confirmed that emergency crews are on standby just in case. Over 25 million people felt some level of shaking, most reporting it as weak to light, but it definitely served as a reminder that we’re living in earthquake country.

Whether you're a lifelong Californian or new to the area, it’s another nudge to be prepared. And next time your dog or even the elephants start acting weird? Might be worth paying attention. Stay safe out there.
