Spurs U21 Set for Sunderland Clash in Penultimate PL2 Showdown
Alright, here we go—Tottenham Hotspur's Under-21s are back in action tonight, April 7th, as they head up north to face Sunderland in what is their second-to-last Premier League 2 game of the season. While the young Lilywhites can no longer qualify for the end-of-season playoffs, there's still plenty of pride and momentum at stake for Wayne Burnett's squad.
Spurs are coming into this one off a strong 4-0 win over Blackburn Rovers, a performance that featured a standout hat-trick from striker Jaden Williams and a goal from rising star Mikey Moore. Moore, by the way, has already made seven appearances for the senior team this season—impressive stuff for a 17-year-old. Tyrese Hall has also been quietly effective throughout the campaign, notching five goals and four assists from midfield.

Tonight’s opponents, Sunderland U21s, have been a mixed bag this season. They’re currently sitting 12th in the table and recently played out a goalless draw with Nottingham Forest. Despite some inconsistency, they’ve pulled off some impressive wins—like a 6-0 thrashing of Derby and a 7-0 dismantling of Huddersfield in the Premier League Cup. They’ve also beaten top sides like Manchester United (5-2) and Arsenal (2-1), so clearly, they’re not a team to be taken lightly.
Graeme Murty’s side are pushing for a playoff place and are also eyeing qualification for next season’s International Premier League Cup. So, there’s a lot on the line for them, unlike Spurs, who are mainly looking to finish strong and keep developing talent for the future.
Kick-off is at 7pm at Eppleton, and while the match won’t be streamed due to Premier League broadcast rules, Spurs fans can follow live updates via the official Spurs app and Academy social channels. A full match report and video highlights will be available from Tuesday morning.
As for the kits—Spurs will be sporting their light blue away strip, while Sunderland will wear their traditional red and white. Richard Aspinall will be officiating the match, assisted by Stephen Rushworth and Ryan Aldred, with Matthew Malton as fourth official.
So, while there might not be playoff implications for Spurs, this is still a great chance to see some of the club’s most exciting young talents in action. Let’s see how the boys perform on Wearside tonight.
