Stars Look to Stay Sharp and Strike Again Against Red Wings
The Dallas Stars are heading into Detroit tonight to face the Red Wings in the second and final matchup between these two clubs this season. And let me tell you, Dallas has owned this rivalry recently. They’ve swept the season series against Detroit for three straight years, and they’re riding an impressive eight-game winning streak over the Wings dating back to April 2021. The last time these two met back in January, the Stars put on a show with a 4-1 win on home ice. Now, they’ll look to keep that dominance rolling on the road at Little Caesars Arena.
Even though the Stars already have their playoff spot locked up and are set to face Colorado in the First Round, there’s still a lot at stake in these final regular-season games. For one, it’s about momentum. Coming off a five-game losing streak, Dallas needs to shake off the rust and get back into their scoring groove. They’ve been one of the highest-scoring teams in the league all year, but lately, that firepower’s been dimmed — and against non-playoff teams, no less. This is the perfect chance to recalibrate and reset before the postseason grind begins.
Jake Oettinger is back in net tonight, and that’s a big deal. He’s chasing his 37th win of the season — which would be a career-high — and he's someone the Stars will be relying on heavily come playoff time. There’s also some personal milestones on the line: Jamie Benn is sitting at 399 career goals. One more, and he joins Mike Modano as the only players in franchise history to reach 400. It could be a special night.

Don’t sleep on the young guns either. Wyatt Johnston has had a breakout season, hitting 70 points as a 21-year-old — something no one else in team history has done at that age. He’s scored in bunches lately and already has five points in five career games against Detroit.
Then there's Jason Robertson. This guy is on a heater when it comes to facing the Red Wings. He’s notched 19 points in his last 11 games against them and has points in 12 of 13 total matchups. Basically, when Robo plays Detroit, something good almost always happens for Dallas.
On the flip side, Detroit’s Patrick Kane is doing his part to close the season strong. He’s got 17 points in his last 15 games and continues to be a veteran presence, even if the Red Wings won’t be dancing in the playoffs.
But beyond the stats and the streaks, what’s really interesting about tonight’s game is what it means for the depth players. With some of the core guys getting rest or recovering — like Miro Heiskanen — it opens the door for names like Brendan Smith and Alexander Petrovic to step in and make a case for playoff minutes. Smith scored his first goal of the season last game, and you could just see how much that moment meant to the bench. Petrovic, too, has been grinding in the AHL and is now getting a chance to show what he can bring. These aren’t just “meaningless” games; they’re auditions, and that makes every shift matter.
The puck drops at 8PM CDT, and it’s all going down on Victory+, NHL Network, or FDSNDETX if you’re tuning in. Whether it’s Robertson adding to his streak, Benn hitting 400, or one of the depth guys stepping up big, there’s plenty of reasons to watch this one closely. Let’s see if Dallas can dial it in and head into the playoffs with a little extra swagger.
