Villa Triumph Over Southampton Despite Asensio's Penalty Woes
Let’s talk about what went down at St. Mary’s—Southampton vs Aston Villa, a match that had its fair share of drama, even if the scoreline was pretty one-sided by the final whistle. Villa walked away with a 3-0 win, and yet, if you were watching, you know the story wasn’t as straightforward as it looked on paper.
First off, Marco Asensio. What a strange afternoon for him. Not often you see a player miss two penalties in one game and still end up on the winning side, right? That alone made this match a bit of a rollercoaster. Asensio had the chance to put Villa ahead twice from the spot in the second half, but both times he was denied by Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale—who honestly deserves credit for keeping the scoreline respectable for much of the match. Still, Villa found a way through.
The breakthrough came in the 73rd minute when Ollie Watkins—fresh off the bench—latched onto a gorgeous through ball from Youri Tielemans. Watkins struck it first-time, and it rattled in off the underside of the bar. That was his 15th goal of the season across all competitions, and you could just feel the relief from the Villa side.

Not long after, Donyell Malen made it two. Another substitute making an instant impact. This time it was Morgan Rogers delivering the assist, and Malen just coolly slotted it past Ramsdale. That goal gave Villa a comfortable cushion, and from that moment on, Southampton didn’t really threaten a comeback.
Now, just when you thought the action was done, Asensio had another go from the spot in stoppage time. And again—unbelievably—Ramsdale saved it. But this time, John McGinn was there to clean it up and tapped in the rebound to seal the deal at 3-0.
It was a tough day for Southampton, who are already relegated and stuck at the bottom of the table with only 10 points. You could see it in their body language—they tried, but they never really looked like matching Villa’s quality. Their best chance came in the first half when Cameron Archer had a clean look at goal, but he hit it straight at Emiliano MartÃnez. That was pretty much it for their threat.
For Villa, though, this win was huge. It bumps them up to fifth in the Premier League table and keeps their Champions League hopes very much alive. Unai Emery will be pleased overall, though he’ll probably have a word or two with Asensio about those missed chances.
All in all, a solid performance from Aston Villa. A professional job done, even if it came with a few twists along the way.
