Cary Teen Cyclist Injured by Impaired Driver in Tragic NC 55 Crash
Hey everyone, I want to talk about a really troubling incident that just happened in Cary, North Carolina. It's the kind of news that really makes you stop and think about the importance of road safety and responsibility, especially when it comes to impaired driving.
On Friday, just before 5 p.m., a serious crash took place at the intersection of NC Highway 55 and Green Hope School Road. A 15-year-old cyclist was struck while crossing the road, and the impact left the teen seriously injured. Emergency responders were quickly on the scene and rushed the young victim to the hospital, where they're now being treated and thankfully reported to be in stable condition.

The driver involved in the crash has been identified as 65-year-old Robert Gustavson, a Cary resident. Police at the scene determined that Gustavson was driving while impaired, and he was arrested on the spot. He’s now facing charges for DWI—driving while impaired—a charge that sadly is all too common, despite the known dangers and strict laws in place.
The northbound lanes of NC 55 were shut down for a period following the crash, as investigators worked to piece together the sequence of events. The road has since been reopened, but the aftermath of the incident continues to ripple through the community.
What’s most heartbreaking here is that this could have been avoided. A young life was put at serious risk due to the irresponsible actions of someone who chose to get behind the wheel while impaired. It’s a harsh reminder that every decision we make on the road carries weight—not just for us, but for everyone around us.
Our thoughts are with the teen and their family as they recover, and it’s our hope that justice will be served. Let this be a wake-up call to all of us: don’t drink and drive. It's just not worth the risk.
