Jamal, a 27-year-old P.E. teacher from Meridian, Mississippi, captured America's heart and was crowned the 2025 American Idol champion during the grand finale on May 18. His soulful rendition of Anthony Hamilton’s “Her Heart” brought the house down, surrounded by the Top 14 contestants who joined in his emotional moment of victory. This win was historic too—Roberts became the first Black male winner since Ruben Studdard way back in Season 2, in 2003. That’s over two decades of waiting for a moment like this.
But the stage lights and confetti weren’t the only reasons for Jamal’s joy. Just days before his big win, he became a father for the third time. On May 16, he announced the arrival of his daughter, Gianna Grace Roberts, with an adorable Instagram post showing her in a tiny ladybug costume. “Hey world, meet my little ladybug,” he wrote, proudly adding the hashtags #girldadforlife and #idol. His love for his children is clear—Gianna joins her two older sisters, Harmoni and Lyrik, in what is now a trio of joy for the Roberts family.
Right after the finale, Jamal was already thinking about getting back home to cuddle his newborn. “I’ve got a lot of making up to do,” he shared, smiling on the red carpet. Despite his newfound fame and upcoming musical opportunities, Jamal isn’t ready to walk away from his roots in education. Teaching isn’t just a job for him—it’s a passion. “It was never about the money,” he explained. “It’s the kids. They inspire me. So even if I can just pop in from time to time, I want to still be part of their lives.”
From center stage to changing diapers, Jamal Roberts is embracing his new roles with heart and humility. This is more than a win—it’s the beginning of a beautiful new chapter.
