Severe Thunderstorms Loom Over Southern Ontario This Long Weekend

Hey everyone, just a heads-up about the weather situation that’s developing across southern Ontario—and it's not your typical spring forecast. We're in for some pretty intense weather activity over the next couple of days, and if you’ve got outdoor plans for the Victoria Day long weekend, you might want to keep a close eye on the sky.

So here’s what we know: A line of severe thunderstorms is expected to sweep through the region overnight, starting Thursday. CTV London meteorologist Julie Atchison confirmed that the first round of storms is rolling in from the U.S. Midwest and is poised to hit southwestern Ontario late tonight. We’re talking about the potential for heavy downpours, strong wind gusts, lightning, and possibly even large hail.

As that system tracks east, the storms will likely weaken slightly as they approach the Greater Toronto Area, but don’t let your guard down—there's still a solid chance of overnight thunder and rain continuing into early Friday. If you're an early riser, expect a noisy and wet start to the day.

Now, Friday afternoon is where things could get more intense again. A second, stronger system is forecast to move in later in the day, bringing an even higher risk of severe weather, especially across southwestern Ontario. Forecasters are warning of damaging winds and the possibility of more large hail. That’s right—two rounds of storm activity within 24 hours.

Unfortunately, this storm pattern doesn’t stop there. Scattered showers and pop-up thunderstorms could linger into Saturday morning. It won’t be a total washout, but let’s just say sunshine may be taking a back seat for part of the long weekend.

On top of all that, Toronto is expected to hit temperatures near 30°C on Friday—feeling even hotter with the humidex—before we cool off again heading into Saturday and Sunday. So yes, it’s going to be a weather roller coaster: heat, storms, and then cooler temperatures by the holiday itself.

Bottom line? If you’re heading out this weekend—whether it’s for fireworks, family barbecues, or camping—make sure you're weather-aware. Have a backup plan, keep your phone charged, and monitor alerts from Environment Canada. Nature might be putting on its own show this weekend, but it’s not one you want to be caught in unprepared.

Stay safe, and stay dry, Ontario.
