Sky TV Faces Widespread Outage, Promises Fix for Frustrated Viewers
So, if you’ve been sitting down to catch your favourite show and found yourself staring at a blank screen instead—you're definitely not alone. Tens of thousands of Sky TV customers were hit with a major outage last night, and let me tell you, social media has been buzzing ever since.
It all started around 9pm on Thursday, the 15th of May, when viewers across the UK began reporting problems with their Sky service. By around 10:30pm, sites like Downdetector showed nearly 30,000 people facing issues, and that number just kept growing. People were unable to watch live TV, and many Sky Q boxes just weren’t responding—despite being connected to the internet.

Instead of entertainment, customers were greeted with an error message saying, “You can’t watch TV at the moment due to a connectivity problem.” Pretty frustrating, right?
Now, Sky did jump into action fairly quickly. They posted an update on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging the issue and offering a quick fix. According to their official account, the problem stemmed from a technical glitch that caused Sky Q boxes to go into standby mode. Their advice? Turn off your Sky Q box at the power socket, leave it off for 30 seconds, and then switch it back on. That should supposedly bring everything back to normal.
But here’s the thing: that fix hasn’t worked for everyone. Some customers are still in the dark—literally. They’ve gone back to Sky’s Help Team on X, saying their boxes remain unresponsive. In response, Sky has been directing people to private message them for further support.
They’re also suggesting some basic at-home troubleshooting—like checking your Wi-Fi, making sure your box is properly connected, and even attempting a system update. Not exactly ideal when you just want to relax after a long day.
If you’re still experiencing issues, Sky encourages customers to reach out directly. You can call them at 03337593848, use their online messaging service (open daily from 8:30am to 7:30pm), or even submit a formal complaint through their website or by post.
It’s safe to say, this outage has left a lot of households feeling frustrated—especially with the timing, right in the middle of prime-time TV hours. While Sky has made efforts to communicate and offer a workaround, it's clear that many viewers are still waiting for a more effective, long-term solution.
Hopefully, things will get back to normal soon. Until then, it might be worth dusting off the board games or diving into a good book while Sky sorts itself out.
