Swans Overrun by Casey Demons After Late Surge at Tramway Oval

Wow, what a rollercoaster of a game it was at Tramway Oval this Saturday afternoon. The Sydney Swans VFL side came into the match fired up, determined to take it to the Casey Demons—and they certainly did in the early stages. But despite a gutsy effort through the first three quarters, the Swans just couldn't match the firepower Casey brought in the final term.

It was a tale of two games, really. Early on, the Swans were right in it. We trailed by just 14 points at the first break and trimmed it down to a narrow 9-point deficit at halftime. There was a lot of promise in how we moved the ball, with small forwards like Jesse Dattoli, Tom Hanily, and Jack Kluske each slotting three goals apiece. That trio gave fans something to cheer about and looked like they could keep us in it.

Dattoli’s goal on the first-quarter siren was a beauty—composure under pressure, and it really felt like the Swans were building momentum. Then Hanily kicked things off early in the second and backed it up with two more, showing flashes of brilliance. The midfielders were fighting hard, too. Nick Shipley made his return and showed his usual toughness with 19 disposals and 10 tackles. Ollie Florent led the disposal count with 22 and showed he’s hungry to reclaim his AFL spot.

But then came the fourth quarter, and that’s where it all fell apart. Casey simply exploded—kicking 11 unanswered goals. That final term was brutal. Every time the Swans tried to break through, the Demons swarmed and countered. It went from a competitive game to a 94-point blowout in what felt like the blink of an eye. Final score? 24.11 (155) to 9.7 (61).

There are still positives to take from the game, though. The younger Swans are showing heart and development. The fight in the first half proved that the team is on the right track, and games like these—while painful—are important in shaping resilience and structure. Harry Cunningham also made his return from injury with limited minutes but managed 15 disposals, which is a decent contribution.

Looking ahead, the Swans now turn their focus to next Saturday morning’s clash with Richmond at Park Holme Recreation Reserve. After that, they’ll get a well-needed rest with a bye in Round 13. Hopefully, they use that time to reset, regroup, and come back firing.

Tough loss, no doubt, but there’s growth in every challenge—and this young Swans side is still building something promising.
