Tragedy at Columbia McDonald's: One Dead, Another Injured in Broad Daylight Shooting
Hey everyone, I want to take a moment to talk about something that recently happened right here in Columbia, Missouri — and it’s a tough one. Over the weekend, a tragic shooting occurred at a McDonald’s on East Nifong Boulevard. This wasn’t just another headline; it was a heartbreaking and shocking incident that unfolded in the middle of the day, in a place that many of us visit regularly — whether grabbing lunch, meeting friends, or picking up food for the family.
On Sunday, around 12:30 p.m., Columbia police responded to reports of a shooting at that McDonald’s location. When officers arrived at the scene, they found two people suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the victims, 32-year-old Derek Gonzalez, was rushed to University Hospital but sadly did not survive. The second victim, a woman, was also seriously injured but is currently in stable condition.
There was a lot of confusion in those first moments. Police had even received a second call about an active shooter at the nearby Hy-Vee, causing officers to initially split their response. Thankfully, it was later determined that the threat was isolated to the McDonald’s location. No further threat to the public has been identified.

Authorities detained one individual at the scene for questioning, but that person was later released without charges. At this point, police say the investigation is still ongoing, and they’re asking anyone with information to come forward. This situation has left many in the community shaken, and understandably so. It’s not something we expect to see in the middle of a Sunday afternoon, especially in such a public and familiar place.
There were multiple emergency vehicles on site, including Columbia Police Department and Boone County Sheriff's Office units, as well as ambulances. Evidence markers were seen scattered throughout the McDonald’s parking lot, underscoring just how serious and chaotic this event really was.
What’s important now is that we stay informed, stay connected, and support those who have been directly affected. Derek Gonzalez lost his life in this senseless act of violence, and a woman is recovering from serious injuries. Their families, friends, and the entire community are now left to process this devastating event.
We need to do more than just move on. Let’s take a moment to reflect, to check in on our loved ones, and to pay attention to what’s happening around us. If you know anything about what happened, please reach out to the Columbia Police Department or CrimeStoppers. Even the smallest detail could help bring clarity and justice to this ongoing investigation.
Stay safe out there, Columbia.
