Tragedy in the Skies: Business Jet Crashes into San Diego Neighborhood

In the early hours of Thursday morning, a business jet came crashing down into Murphy Canyon, a residential neighborhood that’s home to many military families. It happened around 3:45 a.m., and the devastation it left behind is just heartbreaking.
The aircraft involved was a Cessna 550 Citation, a small business jet commonly used for executive travel. According to authorities, the plane was attempting to land at Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport when something went terribly wrong. Conditions were foggy with low visibility—only about half a mile—and that may have played a role in this catastrophe. The plane never made it to the runway. Instead, it slammed into the side of a home, collapsed the roof, and spilled jet fuel that ignited several vehicles and homes nearby.
San Diego Fire-Rescue responded immediately, but the scene was chaos. Flames engulfed the street, multiple homes were damaged—some completely destroyed—and the fire spread rapidly from car to car. Assistant Fire Chief Dan Eddy said it was like nothing he had ever seen before. Residents woke up to a loud explosion, their houses shaking. One neighbor even said they grabbed a garden hose and tried to fight the fire themselves before evacuating and helping others escape.

Sadly, multiple people died in the crash, all believed to have been on board the jet. At least one person was hospitalized, and two others were treated and released. It's not yet clear how many people were on the aircraft, but the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are now investigating.
What makes this even more painful is that this neighborhood is one of the largest military housing communities in the country. Captain Robert Heely of Naval Base San Diego confirmed that many military families were affected. Mayor Todd Gloria also expressed his support, promising that the city will do whatever it takes to help the victims and rebuild the community.
What’s chilling is that according to flight tracking data, the jet took off from New Jersey, stopped in Kansas, and was just minutes away from landing in San Diego. The pilot had made a routine call announcing the approach, and there were no distress signals or signs of trouble—just silence, followed by disaster.
