Vancouver Braces for Rainstorm Before a Sunny Streak Sets In

Hey everyone! Let’s talk about what’s happening with the weather here in Metro Vancouver. If you were hoping to stash away your umbrella for good, not so fast—we’ve got one more round of wet weather rolling in before the sun finally makes a comeback.

As we step into the weekend, the skies are setting the stage for a bit of a drama. Friday kicked off relatively mild, with temperatures reaching up to 23°C during the day, dipping down to 13°C by night. But that warm spell is temporary. According to Environment Canada, a ridge of high pressure gave us a brief warm-up, but it’s breaking down quickly, making room for a cooler, moisture-laden trough. Translation? Get ready for rain.

By Saturday, we’ll see a noticeable drop in temperature. Downtown Vancouver is expected to hit a high of only 16°C and a low of 12°C. And yes, you’ll want that raincoat because we’re looking at about 9mm of precipitation in the city core. Areas like Langley will face similar conditions. Some neighborhoods—like Burnaby West and Coquitlam Centre—will fare a tad better, with slightly warmer highs around 17°C to 19°C and less rain, anywhere from 7mm to 8mm. Still, it’s shaping up to be a soggy start to the weekend across much of the region.

But here's the silver lining: this rainstorm isn’t here to stay. By Sunday, things begin to dry up a bit. There's only a 30% chance of showers and temperatures will hover around the seasonal norm—about 18°C. It’s not full-on sunshine just yet, but the shift is happening.

Come Monday, we’re looking at a real turnaround. The forecast points to a dry pattern taking over, with a nice blend of sun and clouds expected through at least Thursday. Highs are projected to flirt with or even surpass the 20°C mark, making it perfect for getting outside and enjoying that long-awaited vitamin D. If you’re planning picnics, hikes, or patio hangouts, the upcoming week might be your best shot in a while.

And here’s something else worth noting: Environment Canada says we’re likely heading into a summer with above-average temperatures. While that doesn’t guarantee any specific events like heat domes or major storms, it does suggest that we should prepare for a hotter season overall.

So, keep those sunglasses close—but don’t ditch the umbrella just yet. A little patience through this weekend’s rain, and it looks like we’ll be rewarded with a sunny streak that’s just around the corner.
