Als' Defence Shines Bright in Dominant Win Over REDBLACKS
What a night it was for the Montreal Alouettes as they put on an absolute clinic in Ottawa, walking away with a commanding 39-18 win over the REDBLACKS. If you’re following the CFL standings early this season, you’ll know that the Als are now 2-0—and it’s not just about the wins, it’s about how they’re winning. This team is playing with serious swagger, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Let’s start with quarterback Davis Alexander. This guy continues to impress in just his second season. He went 23 for 32 with 344 yards, a touchdown, and one interception—not to mention, he’s now 6-0 as a starter, which is a franchise record. Only two more wins and he ties CFL legend Danny McManus. What’s clicking for him is that deep-ball connection, especially with Tyler Snead, who had 117 yards on just four catches. And let’s not forget Austin Mack also crossing the 100-yard mark. The air attack was on fire.

But the real story here? Montreal’s defence. They were just relentless. Three interceptions, including a pick-six from Wesley Sutton, completely shut down any rhythm Ottawa was trying to find. Shiltz, the former Alouette now starting for the REDBLACKS in place of the injured Dru Brown, threw three picks and struggled to handle the pressure all night. Ottawa couldn’t break through Montreal’s defensive wall, even getting stopped cold on an early goal-line stand.
A big shoutout to José Maltos too—what a performance. Six field goals, including a booming 50-yarder, and perfect all night long. His consistency kept the Als comfortably ahead when drives stalled.
Ottawa did fight back briefly, thanks to a short-yardage score from Dustin Crum and a nice connection between Shiltz and Bralon Addison in the third quarter. But ultimately, Montreal just had too many answers. Even when a miscue gave Ottawa momentum—a tipped interception, for example—Montreal’s defence or special teams stepped up again and again.
Wesley Sutton’s pick-six in the fourth quarter put the game to bed, and Maltos added one last field goal for good measure. The Als have now won nine straight over Ottawa and 11 in a row at TD Place. Talk about dominance.
So as we head into Week 3, the Alouettes are the team to watch. They’ll face the Edmonton Elks next, while Ottawa looks to regroup against the Stampeders. But one thing’s clear: Montreal is playing like a team with championship intentions. Whether it's the young QB, the explosive receivers, or the lights-out defence, the Als are making a serious statement early in this CFL season.
