Beloved Voice Actor Jonathan Joss Tragically Killed in Texas Shooting
I have some heartbreaking news that’s shaken not just fans of animation and television, but the entertainment world as a whole. Jonathan Joss, the talented actor best known for voicing John Redcorn on King of the Hill , was fatally shot in San Antonio, Texas, on Sunday night. He was 59.
According to police reports and eyewitnesses, the incident unfolded after a heated argument with a neighbor escalated into violence. The confrontation occurred outside Joss's home on the city’s south side. Tragically, the disagreement turned fatal when the neighbor allegedly pulled a gun and shot Joss multiple times before fleeing the scene. Emergency services arrived quickly and attempted to save him, but Joss was pronounced dead on-site. The suspect, Sigfredo Alvarez-Cega, was arrested shortly after and charged with murder. His bond was set at $200,000.

Jonathan Joss wasn’t just a voice actor—he was a cultural icon to many, especially Native American viewers who saw themselves represented in his performances. A proud descendant of Comanche and White Mountain Apache heritage, Joss brought John Redcorn to life with depth, humor, and authenticity for over a decade on King of the Hill . He also gained fans through his recurring role as Chief Ken Hotate on Parks and Recreation and appeared in various television shows and films, including Tulsa King , True Grit , and The Magnificent Seven .
What makes this loss even more painful is that Joss had endured personal hardships in the months leading up to his death. Just earlier this year, he lost his childhood home and two beloved dogs in a devastating fire. He had spoken publicly about the trauma of that event, sharing that he was rebuilding his life "piece by piece, soul by soul." Despite this, he remained gracious and connected with his fans, thanking them for their ongoing support.
In fact, only a day before his death, he had posted on social media asking for a ride home from Austin after an appearance—revealing a man still trying to push forward despite the setbacks. His final post let his followers know he had found a way back. None of us knew then that it would be his last update.
Joss’s death comes just as fans were preparing for the King of the Hill reboot, a revival of the iconic series that defined a generation of animated television. It’s unclear whether he was involved in the upcoming project, but his absence will undoubtedly be felt.
This is a tragic end for an artist who gave so much through his characters. Rest in peace, Jonathan Joss. You were more than a voice—you were a storyteller, a symbol of resilience, and a piece of television history.
