Blockbuster Clashes as EFL Championship Fixtures Drop for 2025-26
The much-anticipated 2025-26 EFL Championship fixtures have just been unveiled, and they’re already causing a stir among football fans across the country. From historic rivalries reigniting to Hollywood-backed promotions colliding, the upcoming season promises drama, intensity, and plenty of storylines worth following.
One of the headline-grabbing matches sees Wrexham making their first appearance in the second tier in over four decades with a mouthwatering away trip to Southampton on Saturday, 9 August. It's a moment of historic significance for the Welsh club, now global sensations thanks to their meteoric rise under the ownership of actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Their opponents, Southampton, also have a story of their own, having endured a turbulent few seasons bouncing between the top two tiers. The Saints now look to steady the ship under their new manager Will Still.
Meanwhile, Birmingham City kick off the season a day earlier on Friday night under the lights, hosting Ipswich Town. The Blues are riding high after a record-breaking League One campaign where they amassed an unprecedented 111 points. With NFL legend Tom Brady backing them from the boardroom, Birmingham’s ambitions to reach the Premier League have never been clearer.

Elsewhere, Leicester City, recently relegated from the Premier League, will begin their campaign against Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday. But uncertainty looms over who will be leading the Foxes, with Ruud van Nistelrooy’s managerial future still hanging in the balance.
The fixture list also rekindles some of English football’s most intense rivalries. Southampton and Portsmouth will square off for the first time in the league since 2012, bringing the fierce South Coast Derby back into focus this September. Ipswich vs Norwich—the classic East Anglian derby—returns as well, lighting up October and April. And Derby County’s survival last season ensures a resumption of hostilities with East Midlands rivals Leicester after 11 years apart.
Wrexham’s meetings with Birmingham City—on 4 October at the Racecourse Ground and 11 April at St Andrew’s—are already being billed as box office events. With both clubs boasting high-profile ownerships and fast-rising reputations, their League One rivalry is now spilling over into the Championship with added stakes.
It’s also worth noting that Charlton Athletic, promoted through the League One play-offs, make their Championship return after five years, starting with a home tie against Watford. Sheffield United, runners-up in last season’s play-off heartbreak, will begin their campaign against Bristol City—a team they beat in last season’s semi-finals.
All in all, the 2025-26 Championship season is shaping up to be one of the most compelling in recent memory. Whether it’s the drama of renewed derbies, the intrigue around managerial sagas, or the spotlight on celebrity owners driving their clubs to new heights, fans are in for a thrilling ride from the very first kick-off.
