Canadian Stars Diallo and Auger-Aliassime Shine Bright at Mallorca Open

It’s a great week for Canadian tennis fans, especially those tuning into the ATP 250 Mallorca Championships. Two of our own — Gabriel Diallo and Félix Auger-Aliassime — have punched their tickets to the quarterfinals, showcasing not only individual brilliance but also the growing strength of Canadian tennis on grass courts.

Gabriel Diallo, fresh off a career-high ranking of World No. 41, kept his momentum alive with a hard-fought victory over Serbia’s Laslo Djere. The 23-year-old Montrealer came out strong in the first set, stumbled a bit in the second, but found his rhythm again in the decider to win 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. His performance was a display of powerful serving and mental resilience — landing 10 aces, winning 83% of his first-serve points, and saving three of the four break points he faced. With this win, Diallo is now expected to crack the top 40, a significant milestone as he prepares for his Wimbledon main draw debut.

Up next, Diallo will face a familiar opponent: fourth-seed Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands. This won’t be an easy match — Griekspoor defeated Diallo earlier this year at Roland Garros. But Diallo isn’t the same player he was then. He already claimed his first ATP title this grass-court season at the Libema Open and seems to be peaking at the right moment.

Meanwhile, Félix Auger-Aliassime is quietly but effectively building his form. After a first-round bye, he overcame France’s Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. The turning point came late in the second set when Rinderknech double-faulted, giving Auger-Aliassime the crucial break he needed. From there, the Canadian closed it out with composure and power.

Now ranked World No. 27, Auger-Aliassime will face Serbia’s Hamad Medjedovic in the quarterfinals. He’s hoping to regain confidence on grass ahead of Wimbledon, especially after three consecutive first-round exits at the All England Club since reaching the quarterfinals in 2021. This Mallorca run might be exactly what he needs to rediscover that spark.

As Wimbledon approaches, it’s clear both Canadians are making strong statements. Diallo is proving that his rise through the ranks isn’t a fluke, while Auger-Aliassime is showing signs of returning to form. Whether you're watching for the love of the sport or the thrill of national pride, these two are absolutely worth keeping an eye on. The quarterfinals in Mallorca are set, and Canada is right in the mix.
