British Survivor Escapes Air India Plane Crash in Ahmedabad
Today, I want to talk about an incident that has sent shockwaves around the world—a devastating plane crash in India that involved an Air India flight bound for London Gatwick. This flight, designated AI171, took off from Ahmedabad airport with 242 people on board, including 53 Britons. Tragically, just moments after takeoff, the aircraft crashed into a residential area near the airport. Among the wreckage and devastation, a single story of survival has emerged—British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, seated in 11A, miraculously lived to tell the tale.
According to reports from Indian authorities and major news outlets like the BBC and Sky News, the crash happened within a minute of takeoff. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, a model known for its otherwise solid safety record, appeared to struggle with altitude and stability. Shocking CCTV footage captured the moment the plane barely lifted off the runway before descending rapidly with its landing gear still out. A fiery explosion followed, sending smoke high above the Ahmedabad skyline.
Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik confirmed that Vishwash Kumar Ramesh survived and is currently being treated in hospital for injuries to his chest, eyes, and feet. He described the terrifying experience in brief but haunting words: “Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly.” When he came to, there were bodies scattered around him. In his dazed state, someone helped him into an ambulance.

Ramesh, a British citizen of Indian origin who has lived in London for over two decades, had been seated away from his brother, who was also on the flight. The fate of his brother remains unknown as rescue operations and identification continue. His family in the UK has since confirmed they’ve been in contact with him, but are anxiously awaiting news of their other relative.
Meanwhile, the global response has been swift. King Charles and Queen Camilla expressed their deep sorrow, calling the crash “appallingly tragic.” UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy activated crisis teams in both Delhi and London, emphasizing the urgent need to support British nationals and their families. Prime Minister Starmer also conveyed his condolences directly to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Air India’s CEO Campbell Wilson released a somber video statement, expressing deep sorrow and focusing on support for the victims and their families. He noted that investigations will take time but assured the public that all necessary support and resources are being deployed.
Aviation experts are already analyzing the crash. Some speculate a possible technical failure related to landing gear or insufficient climb rate. There’s concern this could raise fresh scrutiny over Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner, despite its previously unblemished record.
What’s heartbreaking is that the plane crashed into a building complex housing medical professionals. The loss spans multiple countries and communities. It’s a reminder of how fragile life is and how one flight can alter the lives of hundreds in mere seconds.
For now, the world waits—for answers, for recovery, and for healing. And amidst all this, the survival of Vishwash Kumar Ramesh stands as a rare glimmer of hope in an otherwise dark tragedy.
