Brutal Heat Wave Grips the East Coast with Record Temperatures and Storm Risks

Hey everyone, just a quick heads-up about what’s coming tomorrow — and if you’ve been stepping outside at all this week, you already know it’s intense . A powerful early-season heat wave is continuing to bake much of the East Coast, especially Central North Carolina, with record-breaking highs and sweltering humidity. We’re talking about the kind of heat that doesn’t just make you sweat — it can actually be dangerous.

So here’s what you need to know: The storms that swept through yesterday are finally clearing out, but what’s replacing them is no better. A heat advisory is in effect from 11 AM to 7 PM Thursday for most of Central NC. Expect heat index values — or “feels-like” temperatures — to skyrocket as high as 109°F . Yeah, you heard that right. And if you’re thinking, “Didn’t it just hit 100 degrees?” — you’re absolutely correct. RDU already touched triple digits on Monday, and Tuesday shattered a 2020 record with a high of 102°F , when the previous record was “only” 99.

And while storms may be mostly out of the picture for now, don’t rule out a few isolated severe ones Thursday afternoon into the evening. These could bring some damaging winds, so if you're out late, keep an eye on the sky — or better yet, stay indoors.

But here’s the kicker: Even after sunset, we’re getting very little relief. Temps overnight will only dip into the upper 70s , and in the city — especially in urban zones — they might not even fall below 80. That means heat stress isn’t going away once the sun goes down.

This kind of relentless heat can be dangerous, even deadly, especially for people without reliable cooling. Please take this seriously. Hydrate constantly, stay indoors if you can, find some air conditioning or visit a cooling center. And don’t forget your neighbors, your pets — check in on anyone who might not be able to escape the heat.

This heat wave isn’t just a warm spell; it’s a warning. With summer just having officially started on June 20, we're seeing firsthand how extreme these early-season heat events can be. Let’s all stay alert, prepared, and take care of each other out there.
