Cats Outclass Suns to Extend GMHBA Fortress Streak

Geelong has once again proven why GMHBA Stadium remains one of the toughest places for visiting teams, as they brushed aside the Gold Coast Suns by 24 points in Round 13 of the 2025 AFL Premiership Season. Despite the gloomy weather and early resistance from the Suns, the Cats rose above the challenges to secure a commanding 9.7 (61) to 5.7 (37) win, keeping their undefeated home record intact.

The game kicked off with the Cats pouncing early—bagging the first two goals—and from that point on, they never looked back. Even with the late withdrawal of midfield dynamo Bailey Smith due to hamstring tightness, Geelong’s depth and polish proved too much for Gold Coast, especially when the rain cleared and conditions began to favour cleaner, faster football.

Max Holmes was nothing short of sensational, racking up a career-high 40 disposals and setting the tone with his run-and-carry game. He was the heartbeat of the midfield, particularly in the third quarter where he collected 12 touches and helped Geelong create crucial breathing space. On the forward line, Tyson Stengle was electric, finishing with four goals, including a brilliant snap from the boundary and a composed run-in finish that sealed the contest late.

Tom Atkins brought his usual toughness, with 23 touches, eight clearances, and a goal to his name. Mark O’Connor also deserves special mention for not only racking up 21 disposals and 10 tackles, but also tagging Suns captain Noah Anderson out of the game—limiting him to just 19 touches before a heavy hit in the fourth quarter forced him off the field.

That hit, a collision with Geelong’s Tom Stewart, might draw the scrutiny of the Match Review Officer. The incident left Anderson grounded and unable to finish the game, with questions now swirling about Stewart’s intent and potential repercussions.

Gold Coast showed fight, particularly in the second quarter, reducing the margin to just one point early in the third. But their forward entries lacked finesse, often bombing long to outnumbered targets. Jed Walter and Matt Rowell provided some spark, but it wasn’t enough against a disciplined Cats outfit led defensively by Jack Henry, who consistently intercepted and shut down attacking thrusts.

With this win, Geelong notches its fourth straight victory and reaffirms its position in the top four. Meanwhile, the Suns head into their bye week at 8-4, knowing they’ll need to regroup quickly to stay in the finals conversation.

For the Cats, it's business as usual at GMHBA. For the Suns, the search for that elusive win in Geelong goes on.
