Daniel Cormier Shares Emotional Update on Ben Askren’s Ongoing Health Fight

Hey guys, I just wanted to talk a bit about something that’s been on the minds of a lot of MMA fans lately—Ben Askren. If you’ve followed the sport over the years, you know Ben isn’t just a former world-class athlete, he’s a genuinely good dude with an incredible history in wrestling and MMA. And right now, he’s going through something really tough.

Recently, Ben was hospitalized with a severe case of pneumonia, which came on fast and was reportedly caused by a staph infection. His condition quickly turned critical. The news spread quickly, and it honestly shook a lot of us who have watched his career or listened to his podcast, Funky and the Champ , with Daniel Cormier.

It was Daniel who actually gave us a much-needed update. In his own words, he said, "Ben Askren, our good friend, is having a hard time." That hit hard. Cormier explained that during their last podcast together, Ben was already dealing with some health issues, but none of us realized just how serious it would become.

Thankfully, the good news is that Ben is now back home in Wisconsin. Whether that means he’s out of the hospital or just continuing care locally isn’t entirely clear, but at least he’s with his wife Amy and their children. And that’s what matters right now. Daniel spoke so honestly about how this has affected him and their circle, urging all of us to keep praying for Ben and his family.

What’s been beautiful to see is the response from the MMA community. Fans, fighters—people from all corners—have shown up with love and support. Amy, Ben’s wife, took to social media and said she feels incredibly blessed by the outpouring. You can tell she’s been overwhelmed but also deeply moved. She even said she feels God moving through the love they’ve received, which just goes to show how impactful our support can be.

Ben's story isn't just about fighting in the cage. It’s about resilience. This is a guy who went undefeated for nearly a decade, won championships in Bellator and ONE, represented the U.S. at the Olympics, and even after retirement, kept contributing to the sport with his insights, humor, and experience. He’s a husband, a father, and a community pillar in so many ways.

Let’s keep Ben, Amy, and their family in our thoughts. They’re in the middle of something really difficult. This isn’t just a sports update—it’s about a good man fighting a different kind of battle, and he needs all of us in his corner right now.

We love you, Ben. Get better soon, champ.
