Danny Boyle Closes the Door on Future James Bond Films
You know, sometimes in the film world, a door closes and never reopens—no matter how shiny the franchise behind it is. That’s exactly how Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle feels about James Bond. Despite the recent major shift that’s got Hollywood buzzing—Amazon taking creative control of the Bond franchise—Boyle has made it crystal clear: he won’t be returning to 007. When asked about it, he simply said, “That ship has sailed.”
Now, this isn’t coming out of the blue. Back in 2018, Boyle was actually attached to direct the 25th James Bond movie. It was a huge deal—him teaming up with his longtime collaborator and screenwriter John Hodge. They had a script that Boyle truly believed in. He’s even said he regrets that it never made it to the screen. According to him, the story, which featured a Russian villain and leaned into the dramatic arc of Bond’s death (an idea already negotiated by Daniel Craig), was powerful. He called Hodge a “wonderful writer” and clearly still feels that their version had real potential.

But the creative differences with longtime Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson were too great. They weren’t aligned with Boyle’s vision—and rather than force it, he walked away. Ultimately, that film became No Time to Die , directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, and it turned out to be Daniel Craig’s final performance as the legendary spy.
Even with Amazon now stepping in and Broccoli and Wilson stepping aside, Boyle isn’t tempted to reconsider. For him, the past is the past. And anyway, he’s busy with other creative ventures—like the upcoming 28 Years Later trilogy, which picks up from his zombie classic 28 Days Later . The first of the three films is set to release soon, with a second already dated and hopes high for a third.
So while Bond fans might dream of what a Danny Boyle-directed 007 could have looked like, it’s not a reality we’ll be getting. He’s moved on, and honestly, in a way that shows artistic integrity. Sometimes the most powerful creative decisions are the ones where you say “no.” As Boyle himself put it, whatever happens with Bond going forward is no longer his concern. That chapter is closed.
